Facts

Plaintiff Stephanie Carranzo was a 17-year-old student at defendant Delhi High School in Merced. In 2000, she began having a sexual relationship with defendant Gerardo Arceo, a coach for the school's football team. During the relationship, the plaintiff went on a trip with Arceo and two other teachers at the school. The plaintiff stayed in a hotel room with Arceo overnight on the trip. One month later, Arceo got into a car accident while the plaintiff was a passenger. As a result of the accident, their relationship was discovered.

Injuries

The plaintiff suffered a perforation in her chest wall, a contusion to her lung, lacerations of her liver and several fractures, including one to her jaw.
