On Dec. 26, 2000, a trailer truck failed to stop for a traffic signal at the end of a freeway off ramp in Chino Hills and crashed into and totaled a car operated by an on-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detective. The plaintiff, Barbara McWilliams, 41, a 20-year veteran was unable to continue working as a detective as a result of her injuries and received a disability pension. The plaintiff filed suit against Margarito Morales, the driver, Mike Campbell & Associates Ltd. and M&C Refrigerated Delivery Inc., the employer and owner of the truck.
Settlement Discussions
An Aug. 14, 2003, mediation with John W. Kennedy of JAMS, resulted in a $2.8 million settlement between the parties which included settlement of the worker's compensation lien of the County of Los Angeles for $177,432, and the retirement benefits lien of the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association for $144,058.
