Facts

Angela Haley sued Rreef America after being injured in a slip and fall accident.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Haley worked in a building complex owned by Rreef. On Oct. 5, 2011, she was leaving her work for lunch and crossing through the building's lobby when she slipped and fell.

She sued the building's owners, arguing that they had not properly maintained the building. She claimed she fell because the floor of the lobby had been too slippery, and that Rreef had not done enough to make it safe. She claimed she slipped and fell while walking on a slight gap between a carpet inlay and a carpet runner.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Rreef argued that there was no gap, and disputed whether the accident took place the way Haley claimed it had. They further argued that they did everything they could to make sure the area was safe, and that they had taken steps to warn people of any possible danger. They also argued that no other slip and fall accidents had occurred in the lobby, and that Haley had possibly slipped because she had been wearing worn down shoes.

Settlement Discussions

Haley demanded $60,000 to settle. Rreef offered $25,000, pursuant to CCP Section 998.

Damages

Haley requested $50,000 for her past medical costs, $100,000 for anticipated future medical costs, and $350,000 for her pain and suffering.

Injuries

Haley injured both of her knees, requiring surgery.

Result

The jury returned a verdict in favor of Rreef.
