Facts

Plaintiff Sangeeta Chadha lived with her brother in a single-family house in Fremont. The down payment for the house was paid through income from the family business. The plaintiff's name was not on the title of the house. In 1999, the plaintiff's brother sold the house to defendants Michael and Mary Dearborn. As a condition of the sale, the plaintiff and her brother were allowed to rent the house for 60 days while the brother completed construction on his new house. The plaintiff's brother eventually moved out. The plaintiff remained in the house. When the defendants attempted to move in, the plaintiff refused to leave. The defendants contacted the local police, who convinced the plaintiff to leave the house.

The plaintiff demanded $30,000; the defendant made no offer.

Damages

The plaintiff sought $50,000 in rent that was paid after she left the residence, as well as punitive damages.

Injuries

The plaintiff claimed damages for emotional distress.
