Facts

Plaintiff Applied Medical Resources designs and produces devices for cardiac, vascular, urological and general surgical procedures. The plaintiff held three patents relating to trocar seal technology. The plaintiff alleged that defendant U.S. Surgical Corp. infringed the patents with its trocar and access devices. The plaintiff sued the defendant for patent infringement. The defendants contended that the patents were invalid.

Result

The district court found that one of the three patents was valid and infringed. The jury award of $43.5 million was increased by $11 million based on a finding that defendant willfully infringed the patent.
