Facts
Schindler Elevator Corp., an elevator and escalator company, owns a patent on its personalized elevator control system, Schindler ID. The product uses radio frequency identification technology to let elevator passengers identify themselves with an electronically readable device, such as a badge, and assigns an elevator car to conform to each passenger's preprogrammed floor destination. Schindler and Inventio AG filed a patent infringement action against Otis Elevator Co., another leading elevator and escalator company.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs claimed that defendant's competing system, known as Compass with Seamless Entry, infringed on plaintiff's patent.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Defendant argued that plaintiff's patent was invalid because it was obvious.
Result
The jury found that defendant infringed several claims in plaintiff's valid patent. No damages were awarded.
