Facts
On Feb. 21, 1996, Raymond Dahlgren became involved in altercation with Animal Control Officer, leading to claim that officer used excessive force in the form of a chokehold. Raymond's claim was tried last year in Federal Court, with the jury awarding him $5,360 in damages. (He was also awarded attorney fees under the Federal Civil Rights Act, together with costs.) Plaintiffs Diane and Kristen Dahlgren were present and claim to have suffered emotional distress from witnessing the incident. Diane also claimed loss of consortium.
Settlement Discussions
The plaintiffs made a settlement demand for $60,000 and $40,000 respectively. The defendant made an offer of $1,000 each.
Damages
The plaintiffs asked the jury for $75,000 each.
Other Information
The verdict was reached approximately one year and eight months after the case was filed. A settlement conference held on Sept. 10, 1998, before Judge Mortimer Franciscus resulted in no settlement.
