Facts

Plaintiffs sued Defendants, seeking to close Defendant's elephant exhibit on the grounds that conditions at the zoo were inadequate and abusive to the animals.

Contentions

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants contended that the exhibit met and exceeded the currently accepted standards, representing the state of the art in zoo elephant exhibits.

Result

The elephant exhibit will remain open, but the Court issued injunctions and declaratory relief banning the use of bull hooks and electric shock devices on the elephants, required regular rototilling of the soil of the exhibit to prevent foot and leg problems for the elephants, and required a minimum of two hours of daily exercise for the elephants.
