No prior complications had been noted during her pregnancy. Shortly after her admission, a fetal heart monitor showed an abnormal fetal heartbeat. At 7 a.m. an attempt was made to increase the volume of amniotic fluid surrounding Defendant's fetus, to improve his condition. At 8 a.m. Defendant's fetus was noted as having a prolonged drop in heart rate. An emergency cesarian was ordered at 8:30 a.m. Defendant's infant was born 20 minutes later without any noted brain activity.
