Facts
Plaintiff, a 21-year-old mother of two, was admitted to Defendant county's hospital on November 16, 1992, at 5 a.m. complaining of uterine contractions and bleeding. No prior complications had been noted during her pregnancy. Shortly after her admission, a fetal heart monitor showed an abnormal fetal heartbeat. At 7 a.m. an attempt was made to increase the volume of amniotic fluid surrounding Defendant's fetus, to improve his condition. At 8 a.m. Defendant's fetus was noted as having a prolonged drop in heart rate. An emergency cesarian was ordered at 8:30 a.m. Defendant's infant was born 20 minutes later without any noted brain activity. Furthermore, no brain activity was recorded during periodic testing over the next two weeks. Defendant's newborn was discharged December 3, 1992, and died July 30, 1993, as a result of his condition.
