Facts

The plaintiffs, Joseph and Merina Lam, were traveling to Yosemite National Park, when their car was hit by a
vehicle driven by defendant William Hoffman on State Highway 140.
The plaintiffs contended that the defendant crossed over the center, yellow line and collided head on with their
vehicle. Both vehicles were totaled. The plaintiffs and the three other passengers in their car all suffered
various injuries. Joseph Lam was employed as a product engineer with KLA Tencor. As a result of his injuries
and subsequent surgeries, he missed several months of work.

Injuries

Joseph Lam suffered fractures to his left hip and foot. Merina Lam suffered a perforated jejunum. The other passengers in the car were less seriously injured.

Result

The parties settled for $950,000.
