On January 30, 1993, the plaintiff, Auria Contreras, a 33-year-old travel agent, was arrested by defendant officers of the Los Angeles Police Department ("LAPD") for conspiracy to sell and transport cocaine. The plaintiff's arrest was based on her introduction of a Columbian Cartel drug dealer to a police informant on January 25, 1993. (520 kilos of cocaine were seized in this undercover operation.) The plaintiff brought this action against the defendant City of Los Angeles based on false arrest and imprisonment theories of recovery.
