On October 10, 1989, the plaintiff, Manuel Negron, a 35-year-old sales manager employed by the defendant, Sears Roebuck department stores, was terminated after other employees reported irregularities in the handling of two sales transactions in which the plaintiff was the purchaser. The defendant's stated reason for the termination was the reported irregularities. The plaintiff brought this action against the defendant based on wrongful termination and defamation theories of recovery.
