Facts
The plaintiff became a paraplegic after falling through a skylight while cleaning up the roof of a workshop at defendants' ranch. In the summer of 1997, the plaintiff was sent to the ranch as part of a crew charged with painting the shop. The work required the plaintiff to sweep debris off the roof before paint could be applied. No one informed the college freshman about the existence of the roof's skylights, which had been painted over and further concealed by leaves that had fallen from nearby overhanging trees. Using a broom, the plaintiff pushed the leaves towards the gutter. As he stepped on a skylight, he heard a crack before falling through the roof to the concrete floor below.
