The petitioner claimed that the respondent was gravely disabled and suffered from a mental disorder (schizoaffective disorder) preventing him from caring for himself. Due to his level of dysfunction, respondent needed a conservator and appropriate placement into a controlled environment. The respondent, age 42, asserted that he was not disabled and should be allowed to live on his own without medication or psychiatric treatment.
