Facts
On Sept. 9, 1997, the plaintiff, a 20-year-old receptionist, was driving a 1989 Nissan Sentra, northbound on the Ventura Freeway near Laurel Canyon, when she was rear-ended by the defendant's moving van. The impact pushed the plaintiff's car across the freeway. The defendant's moving van then struck five other vehicles. The plaintiff brought this action against the moving van company based on negligence.

Injuries
The plaintiff claimed she sustained back injuries requiring diskectomy at L4-5 and fusion at L4-S1, and resulting in chronic pain that interferes with her ability to continue working as a receptionist. The plaintiff never returned to work and awarded social security benefits.
Other Information
The settlement was reached approximately 11 months after the case was filed. Before settling with the plaintiff, the defendant's insurer settled with other claimants, depleting the policy limit to $606,893. A settlement conference was held before Hon. Charles W. Stoll, resulting in the reported settlement.
