Facts
Plaintiffs were older television writers who filed a class action against Creative Artists Agency on February 25, 2002, claiming they had been discriminated against based on age. The complaint accused Creative Artists Agency of "refusing to represent older television writers or to refer them for writing opportunities."
Result
The parties settled. Creative Artists Agency will donate $150,000 to a non-profit entity set up to provide financial assistance to struggling older television writers. Creative Artists Agency will pay nothing to plaintiffs, the settlement class members (between 15,000 and 20,000 members of the Writers Guild of America), or their attorneys.
Other Information
This case was the last of 23 separate class actions that were filed by the writers against the major television networks, production studios, and talent agencies. The other 22 cases settled over the past six years for a combined $74.5 million.
