Facts
On Aug. 25, 1995, plaintiff Kathryn Tyllia, a 47-year-old high school art teacher, was traveling in the right hand lane of eastbound I-90 in Seattle. The defendant, Jason Slee, an employee of defendant Startime Cable, was traveling in the lane to the left of the plaintiff. Defendant Slee did not see the traffic slowing ahead and abruptly slammed on the brakes which resulted in the trailer he was pulling to fishtail and swerve into the plaintiff's car. The plaintiffs brought this action against the defendants based on negligence, summary judgment on defendants' liability.
Settlement Discussions
The plaintiffs made a settlement demand for $85,000 on the first day of trial. The defendants made an offer of $40,000 on the first day of trial.

$10,080.62. Additional therapy will be required in the future for pain control
Damages
$5,366 in damage to the plaintiff's vehicle. The plaintiff also lost four days of work and had to take an early retirement.
Injuries
The plaintiff sustained injuries to her neck, upper back and shoulders, as well as headaches and occasional bilateral numbness and tingling in hands and fingers.
Other Information
The verdict was reached approximately one year and six months after the case was filed. A mediation was held on Oct. 28, 1998, before Jack G. Rosenow, who recommended settlement in the $100,000 range.
