On Aug. 27, 1996, a fire broke out at the residence of plaintiffs Ronald and Sylvie Sidebottom. The plaintiffs had been using a small window fan manufactured by defendant Duracraft. The local fire chief concluded that the fire was caused by the Durafcraft fan. The plaintiffs brought this action against Duracraft based on product liability theories of recovery.

The plaintiffs made a settlement demand for $415,000. The defendants made no settlement offer.

The plaintiffs claimed $220,000 in damages for property damage, and additional damages for emotional distress.
