Dean Samuels, an African American male, worked at UCLA Life Sciences South Administration, as a
counseling assistant. He applied for a promotion to Student Affairs Officer, but a white female was selected
instead. SamuelsÆ position was then eliminated, allegedly for lack of work. He was then laid off.

Settlement Discussions

The plaintiff made an original demand of $150,000, but later reduced it to $100,000. The defendant made an offer of $25,000.
