Facts
Former Bold Magazine editor Michael Sapir offered a $500,000 million reward for evidence that Tom Cruise was gay. The magazine claimed that it had obtained video evidence. Sapir was then hit with a $100 million defamation lawsuit, which was eventually settled. Before the parties settled, however, Sapir claimed that Cruise and his representatives hired Anthony Pellicano to spy on him.
Sapir then sued Cruise, Bertram Fields, Greenberg, Glusker, Claman, Fields & Machtinger LLP, and Anthony Pellicano for invasion of privacy and wiretapping charges.
Damages
Sapir sought $5 million in damages.
Result
In a bench ruling, Judge Elihu Berle ruled that allegations weren't brought within the applicable statute of limitations period. Judge Berle found that Sapri had reasonable suspicions about Pellicano's activities as early as 2003, but he did not file his lawsuit until December 2009.
