Facts
Lisa Richardson-Loyd, a 39-year-old black woman, was terminated from the North Academy, a training academy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, after she twice failed two required tests for Peace Officer and Standards Training (learning domain No. 40 on weapons violations and the high-risk traffic stop role-playing scenario). Richardson-Loyd sued the County of Los Angeles and the supervisor of all the deputy sheriffs, Sheriff Leroy Baca. She alleged retaliation, hazing, workplace violence, intentional infliction of emotional distress, wrongful termination in violation of public policy, and harassment based on gender and race.
Damages
Loss of earnings.
Injuries
Richardson-Loyd claimed emotional distress.
Other Information
Judge Richard Fruin Jr. dismissed Baca and the claims for retaliation, hazing, workplace violence, discrimination and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The trial proceeded against the county of Los Angeles on the race and gender discrimination and wrongful termination claims. Judge Fruin granted the motion for nonsuit and dismissed the case because Richardson-Loyd offered no evidence that she was subject to disparate treatment or that she was qualified to graduate.
