Facts

Jeri Connolly and Rhonda Arneson filed a class action against Weight Watchers North America Inc. on behalf of individuals who worked for Weight Watchers in California as "Leaders" or "Receptionists" between Jan. 9, 2011 and Dec. 9, 2012.

Contentions

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs alleged that defendant failed to furnish itemized wage statements compliant with the California Labor Code and failed to pay workers the minimum wage for all hours worked and overtime wages. Plaintiffs also alleged that defendant failed to reimburse workers for business expenses.

Plaintiffs asserted claims under the Labor Code and the applicable California Industrial Welfare Commission Wage Order for failure to pay the minimum wage, failure to pay overtime wages for overtime hours worked, failure to reimburse for business expenses, failure to furnish itemized wage statements, violation of California's Unfair Competition Law and Business Professions Code for failure to pay wages and expense reimbursements, and penalties for alleged violations of the Labor Code.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Weight Watchers denied the allegations.

Damages

Plaintiffs sought recovery of unpaid wages, liquidated damages, penalties, restitution, reasonable attorney fees and costs.

Result

Weight Watchers agreed to pay $1,687,500 to settle the dispute.
