PASADENA - Growing up in what was still the Jim Crow era of Jacksonville, Fla., Reginald A. Holmes - now a neutral - reflected on his family's extreme poverty.
"We were push-cart poor," he said. "We collected the bottles, cans, paper and cardboard in a decrepit pickup truck that my mom drove."
One of 10 children, Holmes also endured a tumultuous home life.
