On judging women's gymnastics at the 2008 Olympic Games, Bela Karolyi, influential former coach of Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton, was asked whether the problem was the new scoring system's complexity or judging bias. Karolyi answered, in so many words, that the complexity provided an umbrella of technical incompetence that concealed judging bias. It recalls Samuel Johnson's reply to a passing barge's bowsman, who, pursuant to river custom, insulted Johnson's mother.
