Unlike those countless others, though, she knew the director, members of the board and many of their friends. She had grown up with them in suburbia - a middle class life, comfortable in all respects. But now she was in crisis, and she was as embarrassed as she was needy. A devastating illness had created a personal tipping point from which she had fallen into poverty.
