Chief justice comes to Inland Empire

Hundreds of Inland Empire lawyers and judges gathered Wednesday evening to hear guest speaker Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye discuss her role as head of the judicial branch. The event was a joint meeting of the Leo A. Deegan Inn of Court in Riverside and the Joseph B. Campbell Inn of Court in San Bernardino. It was held at the historic Mission Inn Hotel in downtown Riverside. In a question-and-answer format, the chief justice discussed her role as leader of the judiciary and defended some of her rulings, such as a controversial majority opinion she authored regarding certain litigants' standing to defend Proposition 8, the 2008 California voter initiative that briefly outlawed gay marriage in the state. Cantil-Sakauye also discussed current and future budget challenges faced by the judiciary and urged lawyers to continue to reach out to legislators about the issue. — Katie Lucia
