Law firms gather for annual Koko charity awards
Reed Smith LLP had a big night at the United Way of the Bay Area's annual "Koko Challenge" charity awards Jan. 30, taking home the Big Koko — a large plush gorilla and the top award for law firms with over 100 attorneys in the Bay Area. The firm has been battling rival Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP for the award in recent years, and the two firms have now traded the honor back and forth over the last four years. Sidley Austin LLP took home the Little Koko, the top prize for firms with 50 to 100 attorneys in the Bay Area, while Squire Sanders took home the baby Koko, awarded to a firm with less than fifty local lawyers. The Koko Challenge was started 26 years ago in an attempt to harness the competitive nature of lawyers for charity. Over that time, the challenge has raised more than $30 million for the United Way and associated organizations. — Joshua Sebold
