Lawyers' league crowns fall basketball champions
The Landau Lawyers League capped off its 2013 fall basketball season with playoffs that pitted top teams from each of its "A," "B" and "C" divisions against one another. Girardi Keese edged out Mayer Brown in an "A" Division championship game that went to sudden-death overtime and ended with a score of 71-70. Chris Kanne of Engstrom, Lipscomb & Lack, who played for the Girardi team, was named most valuable player. Jerry Tennison of Mayer Brown was named player of the game after scoring 35 of the team's 70 points. In the "A" tournament semifinals, Girardi Keese defeated Lateral Link, 67-63, and Mayer Brown trounced Morrison & Foerster, 75-56. The "B" Division finals game saw Pillsbury topple Reback McAndrews, 55-42, with Pillsbury's Sanjay Paul earning the MVP nod. Mike Ayers of Reback McAndrews took player of the game honors. In that semifinal round, Pillsbury bested KTS/Movaghar & Yamin PLC with a score of 68-50. Reback McAndrews took down Skadden Arps, 41-33. The "C" Division tournament ended with Arent Fox triumphing over Milbank Tweed, 59-44. David Bayles of Arent Fox was named MVP, while Milbank's Jack Goodfriend earned the player of the game title. In the semifinals, Arent Fox overcame Lee Hong, 48-46, and Milbank Tweed outscored Pircher Nichols, 48-33. Registration is currently open for the league's spring basketball season, which begins in February. The league is also hosting a 3-on-3 tournament in downtown Los Angeles beginning Jan. 27. — Ben Adlin
