Legal nonprofit honors employment and immigration advocates
The nonprofit California Rural Legal Assistance Inc. hosted its annual fundraiser, "San Francisco Fiesta," on Nov. 5 at the Public House, a bar at AT&T Park. The organization honored Kelly M. Dermody, a partner at Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP in San Francisco who specializes in employment and consumer class actions, with the Dolores Huerta Adelita Award for her work in the community, which has included serving as president of the Bar Association of San Francisco and co-founding a nonprofit that provides trauma therapy to children exposed to violence and loss at an elementary school in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood. CRLA also gave the Cruz Reynoso–Ralph Abascal Don Quixote Award to Cecillia D. Wang, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Immigrant Rights' Project, whose work involves challenging state anti-immigrant laws, racial profiling and unlawful police practices. — Laura Hautala
