Japanese Bar honors alternate public defender
The Japanese American Bar Association held its 37th Annual Installation and Awards Gala on Feb. 22 at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Among the evening's honorees was Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender Janice Y. Fukai, who was awarded this year's Public Service Award. Fukai is the first Asian-American to lead the department.The event also honored Hawaii Senator Mazie K. Hirono, who served as keynote speaker, and actor and human rights' activist George Takei. -Connie Lopez
