Indictment: Birthing centers coached Chinese women in fraud

A federal grand jury indicted 19 people in connection with three Southern California "birth tourism schemes" that helped Chinese clients give birth and obtain U.S. citizenship for their offspring, according to documents unsealed Thursday.

The 17 cases include the first-ever federal criminal charges brought against birth tourism business operators and customers, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
