Why the ban on hair discrimination is important

California has just passed legislation prohibiting discrimination against “traits historically associated with race … including … hairstyles.”

I just shaved. It was easy enough. As I eliminated my mustache and goatee, the dubious accomplishment of my summer vacation, I appreciated how imperative it is for those of us who advocate for civil rights to support the movement to ban discrimination against blacks who grow natural hair. While my facial hair had no special significance, black natural hair is not merely a style to be worn but also an important statement about identity.
