Man sprayed by sewer truck hose wins $5.65M from Santa Maria jury

“It’s a fair verdict,” said the plaintiff’s attorney, Nigel A. Whitehead of the Ernst Law Group. “It’s important to point out it is the largest verdict in Santa Maria by a factor of three, and we anticipate adding prejudgment interest of $1.2 million and costs of $300,000.” This would bring the total judgment to $7.1 million.

A Santa Maria man who said he temporarily lost 80% of vision in his left eye and suffered brain damage when a sewer cleaning truck sprayed him won a $5.65 million jury award.

The Santa Barbara County jury decided on Friday to award the man $900,000 in economic damages, $1.6 million in noneconomic damages, $3 million in future economic losses and $150,000 to the man’s wife for her damages. Rodriguez et al. v. City of Santa Maria, 19CV04142...
