In person or virtual? Confusion arises in some courts

The ubiquitous video conferencing software was a huge help in keeping courts running during the pandemic. But with restrictions easing another problem has emerged: confusion over whether hearings are remote or in person.

It turns out there are worse things than telling a judge, “I am not a cat.”

Senior U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb wasn’t amused on Monday when attorneys on one side of a case didn’t show up in his Sacramento courtroom — apparently because they thought the hearing was going to be held remotely.
