Bankruptcy of Diocese of Santa Rosa appears part of national trend
In 2019, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 218. The law opened up a three-year window for people to file cases between 2020 and 2022 that otherwise would have been barred by a statute of limitations. The Diocese of Sacramento and San Diego announced in recent weeks they also might need to file for Chapter 11 protection.




Attorneys for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Rosa will ask a federal bankruptcy judge Thursday to allow it to continue to use its current cash and accounting systems to stay operational after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday.
Other dioceses in California could also face federal bankruptcy judges soon. This would repeat a scenario seen in several other states.
