The proposed 2024-25 budget Gov. Gavin Newsom introduced on Wednesday mostly protected court funding. But that could change.

Newsom’s nearly $5.2 billion courts budget represents a slight increase from last year at a time when both revenues and overall spending are down. This is partly because the courts are integral to Newsom’s goals reducing homelessness, reforming mental health care and tackling retail theft.
