On Oct. 8, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 497 into law. The bill was introduced by Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (D-Los Angeles), a devoted labor rights organizer and activist. The new law went into effect on Jan. 1, 2024.
