Bail purgatory in Los Angeles

The recently enacted bail schedule created by LA Superior Court judges began with good intentions, but has had disastrous outcomes.

In a stunning example of good intentions gone seriously wrong, Los Angeles Superior Court judges enacted a new bail schedule last October, ostensibly to protect the poor and indigent. However, the unintended consequences of their actions, contrary to settled law and practice, have unfolded in a manner that inflicts significant harm on these individuals.
