State loses ability to regulate 5 casino tribes due to US law violation

Attorney General Rob Bonta agreed the state will bide by a 2023 federal court order that leaves the tribes dealing directly with the federal government. Several other tribes could soon also escape state regulation.

The state of California has lost its ability to regulate five casino gaming tribes, a tribal attorney said Friday. This result, said Lester J. Marston, stems from what he called Gov. Gavin Newsom’s aggressiveness in trying to force tribes to follow state environmental and labor laws, in violation of the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
