Cases could redefine funeral homes' financial obligations

The cases come at a pivotal time for the industry, as an aging U.S. population and a generation of nearly 72 million baby boomers should be leading to a yearslong boom in the funeral business.

Two cases before the 3rd District Court of Appeal could redefine the financial obligations a funeral home has when a customer buys items and services long before they die. One of the two cases argued Monday involves a “preneed” purchase made by a woman who has since lived more than 30 years.
