Grants Pass files opening brief in high court anti-camping case

The city’s attorneys argue that short jail terms for serial violators are not cruel and unusual. The outcome of the case could significantly affect how cities respond to housing encampments on public property.

Attorneys for an Oregon city challenging the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision that its anti-camping ordinances were unconstitutional filed their opening brief on Monday ahead of oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in April.
