The Diocese of Fresno will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the face of 154 civil sexual abuse claims, its Bishop announced.
In a statement to parishioners on Tuesday, Bishop Joseph V. Brennan said the filing will probably come in August. Fresno would be the fifth diocese to declare bankruptcy in the past 15 months, after the close of a three-year window allowing claims that would otherwise be time-barred.
