
Judge Kimberly J. Mueller
A federal judge has held California in contempt for inadequate mental health staffing in prisons, ordering the state to pay nearly $112 million in fines within 30 days.
Tuesday's order came after months of warnings from U.S. Eastern District of California Chief Judge Kimberly J. Mueller. The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has appealed the ruling, according to spokeswoman Terri Hardy.
The order comes after decades of litigation in Coleman v. Newsom
