California Supreme Court tightens rules for pretrial detention

The court affirmed the longstanding practice of allowing hearsay evidence that would not be admissible in a trial but also found that prosecutors did not submit enough evidence in this case.

The California Supreme Court clarified when a detainee can be held pending trial. Thursday's unanimous opinion penned by Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero addresses confusion that came up when the court issued a landmark bail ruling three years ago.
