Newsom abandons effort to get alternative Prop 47 reform measure on ballot

Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has been vocal about his support for Proposition 47, said SB 1381 was nixed because of a tight deadline to add the necessary amendments and maintained that the initiative had the votes to pass.

A day before the state Legislature was scheduled to vote on an alternative measure to combat retail theft and drug use, Gov. Gavin Newsom's office announced that it was abandoning the effort, resulting in a major win for anti-crime organizations, Republican lawmakers, and district attorneys throughout the state.
