The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the administrative agencies’ authority but has imposed a stricter requirement for justifying their decisions. This ruling emphasizes the need for the Court to offer clearer guidance for the future.

In a 6-3 decision on June 26, 2024, with Justice Roberts writing for the majority, the Supreme Court overruled Chevron U.S.A. v. Natural Resources Defense Council 867 U.S. 837 (1984). Until now, under the Chevron decision a court would have deferred to administrative agencies on interpretations of statutes even where that same court read the statute differently. [Page 1.]
