Court rules LA County Counsel trial attorney was improperly granted custody of child

The infant was placed with the attorney by the Department of Children and Family Services after the mother tested positive for drugs and displayed signs of mental illness.

An attorney with the Los Angeles County Counsel's office was improperly granted custody of a child that was taken from their mother by the Department of Children and Family Services, an appellate court ruled. The ruling states that the attorney intentionally prevented the child's aunt from taking custody despite state law requiring the department to prioritize relatives for placement.
