Women Lawyers of Los Angeles Bring 'Power' to Students

In collaboration with the Los Angeles Superior Court, Women Lawyers of Los Angeles hosted 70 students from Los Angeles Central High School on Jan. 28 as part of their Power Lunch Program. Students learned from Deputy Thomas Jordan of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department about the inner-workings of the justice system, and met with legal and law enforcement professionals to gain insight into their careers. The lunch culminated with a round of Judicial Jeopardy. The program's mission statement says it aims to provide these students from particularly under-served and high-crime areas and thus may have "negative experiences with and distrust of" the system to instead have "positive and informative" interactions with it. Women Lawyers of Los Angeles plan to host six Power Lunches in 2011 throughout Los Angeles.
