Jensen likes to see the connections and interplay between technology companies he represents in public offerings.
Last year, the Cooley LLP partner advised underwriters on the $240 million IPO for ServiceNow Inc., a cloud-based IT service management software maker. The company's successful public offering was the first following Facebook Inc. and was considered to have revived the appetite among companies to go public.
Jensen said the company was efficient and professional, which left little "weakness" in the transaction.
"If all deals were as easy as that to work on, life would be good," he said.
But writing an IPO for a software company that facilitates how a user interacts with technology, such as he did for ServiceNow, can resemble one for a technology company that makes it easier for users to access wireless Internet service. Jensen did precisely that for client Ruckus Wireless Inc., which he helped take public in November 2012.
"I'm writing IPOs for different companies at different times, but with the same concepts," Jensen said.
Ruckus Wireless was the "classic Cooley client" for eight years before going public, and the once-tiny company required more involvement to prepare for the IPO. Jensen said he felt like he was part of the team, working with the company and giving them guidance along the way.
While the public offering process may be similar from one company to the next, Jensen said he enjoys learning about each company and their products to help them each get to the next stage in their respective business.
"Trying to be a counselor and a strategic adviser is the fun part of our job, rather than just being a legal technician," he said.
