Weekly Appellate Report Podcast #5 Montebello v. Vasquez; Webb v. Special Electric

Don Willenburg (Gordon & Rees) on tort liability of raw materials suppliers in light of Webb v. Special Electric, and Rex Heinke (Akin Gump) speaks on whether anti-SLAPP protects city council votes. Brian also relays developments in other appellate cases, including Vergara v. California and People v. Franklin

This week's show focuses on two cases at the California Supreme Court, one just ruled upon, and another which had arguments this week. Don Willenburg joins the show to talk about the first case, Webb v. Special Electric Company, which tests the limits of a raw material supplier's tort liability to end users of hazardous substances, and also the sophisticated intermediary defense. Willenburg is a partner at Gordon & Rees.

Rex Heinke, a partner with Akin Gump, will offer his take on a case argued Thursday, City of Montebello v. Vasquez et al, which asks the state high court to determine whether the anti-SLAPP statute protects a very specific activity: voting on the part of government officials.

The show then finishes with a short roundup of three cases that saw developments this week: Vergara v. California (2AD), People v. Franklin (CSC), and Foster v. Chatman (USSC).
